Fleas

Fighting fleas? We think this comic is pretty accurate!

Fleas are a type of wingless parasite that feeds on the blood of people and animals. Since fleas aren’t picky with their hosts, they are notorious for spreading diseases and other parasites from one host to another, such as tapeworm larvae and bubonic plague from rodents to humans.

Flea Identification

Flea

  • Body length measures between 2 and 8mm
  • Wingless and oval shaped
  • Light brown to deep brown colour variations
  • Has disproportionately small head
  • Six legs – large hind legs for jumping long distances
  • Flea eggs are light coloured and oval shaped

Flea Bites

There are three main species of fleas that attack people in Australia, cat flea, dog flea, and human flea. These fleas leave an intensely itchy bite, and infections are common due to scratching. To identify a flea bite, look for an itchy patch of skin that is red, swollen or lumpy. Flea bites are usually found on legs and feet, or other accessible body parts.

Treatment for human flea bites include:

  • Resist the urge to scratch
  • Wash bites with antiseptic soap to reduce risk of infection
  • Apply an ice pack to relieve swelling
  • Use calamine lotion, anaesthetic creams or other similar products to treat itching
  • Seek treatment for possible tapeworm infection
  • See your doctor if an infection occurs

Treatments for pet flea bites include:

  • Visit the Vet or pet store for pet flea treatments
  • Treat your pet for tapeworm

Feeding

Adult fleas can survive for months without feeding. To feed, a flea uses its saw-like jaws to cut through skin and administer their saliva, which contains anticoagulants to keep the blood flowing. Female fleas tend to lay their eggs after feeding and the larvae cocoon themselves within weeks of hatching. Any vibration, such as footsteps, will prompt the fleas to emerge from their cocoons and feed. This is why you may be bitten after entering an unoccupied house.

Fleas and Pets

Common household pets such as cats and dogs are known to be prevalent hosts for fleas and should be treated regularly to prevent infestation. To check for fleas on your animals, part their fur (particularly around warmer spots such as the ears and bottom) and look for fleas themselves or flea excrement (dark minuscule specs). To positively identify flea excrement, place some of the specs onto a dampened white tissue and look for a small ring of blood around the excrement.

Treating Your House

At home prevention methods can reduce your likelihood of flea infestation, however, it is always best to seek professional advice if you are concerned about your property.

At-home protective methods include:

  • Cleaning animal bedding and surrounding areas
  • Regularly vacuuming carpets – dispose of the rubbish bag immediately since it will contain fleas and eggs, then spray your vacuum cleaner bag with surface spray
  • Use an appropriate spray or flea bomb in affected areas
  • Call Enviro Guard – If you want the job done right the first time round!
